With the school's focus on the boys' varsity basketball playoff run, the hard work by both soccer teams has gone largely unnoticed lately.

Paul Deleon's boys finished the season by losing three straight close games after a 2-1 win at Mexia behind goals by Manuel Uribe and Caleb Drake.

"I enjoyed this season a lot because we actually got to meet new people, travel to other schools, and play against better schools than just 3A schools," Sergio Hernandez said. "I'm looking forward to next year because I'm pretty sure we're going to do even better."

Before the win, the Pirates lost at University, and were edged by Lorena (3-1), Robinson (2-1), Lampasas (1-0), and Killeen Ellison (3-0) with both goals by Manuel Uribe. The goal against the Trojans was the first scored on them all year in district.

"Despite our record, we've actually improved lately because at first we didn't play any 4A-5A schools but beat most of the 3A ones we faced," Elisei Rusu said. "Our score was much closer against Lampasas, and we've already beaten Mexia, so we had a good chance against them and Killeen, which came to La Vega the second time."

Coach Lesley Baker's girls have had a harder time in the final round of district, losing consecutive shutouts to powerhouse Midway, Killeen, and Lorena but still has a good shot at beating Lampasas tonight at Pirate Field after losing only 3-0 on the road Feb. 7. The team then traveled to Killeen Ellison Mar. 7 before finishing the season against University, Robinson, and Midway.
