The JV team relaxes after the big win over Connally. - Steven Colwell

The JV baseball squad opened the season with wins over Axtell (7-0), arch-rival Connally (8-4), and University (19-2) in the Cadet Tournament, only losing to Groesbeck, 8-6, before beating McGregor, 6-5 and losing to Robinson in the Reicher Tournament, 6-0, before winning its last two tourney games over Austin Regents, 2-1, and the rematch with McGregor, 12-6.

At home vs. the Goats Mar. 6, the Modocs had their revenge, winning 15-5 and the following week 10-1 at Fairfield over the Eagles Mar. 12. The Connally rematch was rescheduled after a rainstorm, then cancelled because of a wet field before LV played host to the Rockets and dropped a 21-3 contest on Mar. 23.

On Mar. 27, the Pirates dropped a 10-4 game to Gatesville with pitcher Daniel Salazar, JoJo Buchanan, William Wake, and Julian Tovar crossing the plate, while the team traveled to China Spring Mar. 30 and suffered an 8-0 shutout as well as a 9-0 whitewashing at Lorena Apr. 2 with Byron Bryant on the hill to drop their district record to 0-4 (8-6 overall).

On April 5, The team started the second half of district play against the Connally Cadets with Alex Gomez on the mound working with Bryant behind the plate working together to shut out the Cadets and helping the Pirates earn their first district win, 14-0, with Salazar scoring three times, Tovar, Brandon Berry, Wake twice each, and Brandon Martinez, Bryant, Buchanan, Trevor Freeman, and Santiago Olvera once.

The rematch vs. Robinson started off looking something like a sloppy major league game with only one hit by Modoc Daniel Salazar and a couple by RHS through four innings, while Bryant shut out the Rockets. Most of the other sticks for La Vega weren’t working except for Brandon Martinez’s single in the fifth until the sixth.

Down 2-0in the top of the sixth inning, the Modocs had Bryant hit a line-drive, two-RBI single, driving in catcher Gomez, who had a bloop single over second base and stole second base on the next pitch, and Tovar, who managed a walk. However, the Pirates were unable to score after that and lost, 4-2.

Although the team didn’t win, it was still one of their best games of the season, and they seem to be ending the season on a good note because they improved against better competition.

The Pirates looked to bring home a win from a trip to Gatesville but were once again defeated, this time in a 11-0 loss with Salazar on the mound and only three Modocs reaching base, Olvera with a second-inning single after Gomez gaining first on a dropped third strike, and Bryant on two walks.

The next game for the 8-9 Pirates (1-6 in district) was a home game against China Spring April 17 as the team suffered another offensive letdown, only managing one run afted a double by Gomez and a Cougar error on Buchanan's fly ball in the second inning. They also reached base in the third inning on Gomez's walk and Buchanan's single after Salazar led off the game with a double but was left stranded after three Modoc strikeouts. Salazar also stroked a single in the fifth as did Gomez and Trevor Freeman in the sixth.

The team's last game is at home against the Lorena Leopards at 4:30 p.m.
