Eight Pirates were selected to play and cheer for the North team in the fifth annual Good Hoops Good Grades Games Apr. 14 at McLennan Community College's Highlands Gym, both won by the North after the Midway Color Guard presented the flags beforehand.

The girls' game preceded the boys' as Faith Gibson, Shawnequa Norwood, and Brittany Perales started and took an early lead before the South battled back for the lead in the second half. Perales completed a three-point play with 5:27 left in the game to retake the lead, but the South edged ahead for a 50-46 victory after Norwood fouled out. Perales finished with a game-high 18 points, including her team's final 12 to earn the Leadership Award while Gibson and Norwood participated in the halftime three-point competition, and Gibson sang the national anthem before the boys' contest.

In the boys' game, Trey Ridge also took the Leadership Award for his 17 points, second on the team to Connally's John Holt, although his potential game-winning three-pointer missed at the final buzzer as his team fell, 72-71. Joining Ridge on the North team was Steven Cottrell, while Jatavia Douglas, Daniela Sanchez, and Elizabeth Tovar joined a dozen other local cheerleaders on the sidelines to lead the yells.

All participants were invited to attend a recognition luncheon before the games at Highland Baptist Church featuring former Baylor University player Pat Nunley, who now works for the Bears' broadcasting department.
