If you’re like many teenagers out there, you’re probably still a little upset the Harry Potter series is gone forever. Done. No more movies, no more books…Fear not, Lancers. Lake Park’s got you covered.
The Quidditch team is currently held as a part of Gamers' Club, at East Campus on Thursdays from 3 to 4 p.m.
"This sport brings together those who are Harry Potter fans and those who are total jocks," said senior Amber Kilgore, who started the team this year.
Just like in the books, there are seven people to a team- three Chasers, two Beaters, a Keeper, and a Seeker.
"The Chasers take the Quaffle (a volleyball) and attempt to shoot it through the three hoops on the opposite side of the field,” said Kilgore. “The Beaters use Bludgers (dodgeballs) to prevent the Chasers from reaching the hoops to score and the Keeper is the goalie….Hoops are 10 points, [and the] Snitch is 30." Everyone has a broomstick except the Snitch Runner.
The Seekers spend the whole game looking for the Snitch Runner, a person not part of either team who runs around with the Golden Snitch, a small golden ball that flies really fast in the books, and a tennis ball in a sock in real life. Catching the Snitch ends the game.
The Quidditch World Cup took place Nov 12 and 13 in New York, with over 2,000 players on teams from over 100 colleges. This is the fifth year the event has been held, and it has grown in size every year since it started.
"Quidditch is a fun sport that is played around the nation and is going [around] the world," said Kilgore.
Anyone with questions should talk to Kilgore, East Campus math teacher Kristina Stanis, or Patrick Buchenot.
